Phew.. After so much of talking about it, the project day happened last saturday.. It was a grand success in terms of working with the Kids, getting them excited and keeping them excited.. Its actually unbelievable, the kind of events that took place that day..

The team for that day, Yasmin, Ryan, Sandesh, Sanjana. Shalini, Sabbah, Mukthi and I met at Utsav hotel, Koramangala at about 7:15 AM.. I went out and got a copy of Bangalore Mirror and found an article about this project in it.. Mukthi somehow managed to get us a minibus for transport and which I didnt know.. For us, any form of help at any time is taken.. And I thought that getting us a bus was really really nice.. We headed out towards Gunjur.. As per plan we reached there at about 8:30..

We got out of the bus and what a SIGHT!! The school ground was filled with the High School Kids.. They were out and ready to go out there with us and plant trees.. But that was not the plan.. They had painted out posters, made banners and sign boards dipicting some of the stuff that we had talked about on the presentation day.. This initiative taken by the school was really nice.. That was not all.. There was a marching band standing there.. Soonafter we met the teachers and Kumar, ther Kids got up and Began to March.. Our assumption was that they were going to the planting site.. To our surprise, the School had organised a March thru the streets of Gunjur to let the people know about the initiative the Kids had taken for themselves “Marige Mare”.. It didnt look like a forced upon event for the kids as they put their lungs out screaming slogans and letting everyone know about it.. We could hear a very synchronous “Hasire Usiru, Usire hasiru” and “Manegondu Mara, Oorigondu Hola”.. We headed back to the school in a little while..

The plan now was to take the children in batches of 30 to plant trees.. As we took the first batch, Janet(from TreesForFree)’s guests from B.B.M.P were there at the planting site.. B.B.M.P came forward in supporting this project by providing tree shelters for all the trees being planted.. This kind of a move is very very positive in terms of the impact it has on people about their judgements against the B.B.M.P.. This move, according to me, must be applauded and appreciated to the fullest.. Soon enough, the dignetories spoke words of encouragement and we were off getting our hands dirty.. The Tree planting with the Kids went on till about their lunch time.. With three batches of Kids planting the trees, a road with about 156 trees was covered in a matter of an hour and half..

The activity that day consisted of planting 800 trees for which there were several other volunteers from different organisations, from TreesForFree etc.. I , on behalf of MarigeMara, would like to thank them in their efforts and for letting us have a GREAT time that day.. We also like to thank our sponsors for sharing our vision and coming forward to help us..

*”The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns
to its original size.”* Oliver Wendell Holmes said this, and this is exactly
what our objective is. To expand their minds. For life.

Marige Mara is a group formed from a community of friends and like-minded
people to make a difference in our immediate world.
We formed a group to be a stand in causing awareness amongst government and
rural high school children about what is happening in the world all around
    them, even literally so.

One of us alone cannot change the world. But the power of togetherness, the
    strength in unity is unimaginable.
We want to make a difference to the world we live in. The children are our

The project has two legs – “A fun presentation to spread awareness” leg and
    a “tree planting drive.”

The impact of the first leg is the alteration in the children’s way of
    thinking about their worlds.

The plantation leg of the project is an opportunity for the children to know
what it feels like to care, and to take action on it. The trees they plant
are a by-product of that mind-set shift; their witnesses of the difference
THEY have made and can always make.

To spread awareness amongst underprivileged school children in Bangalore, on
the state of our planet, the state of our city, and the predictable future
of our living conditions with and without action.

To provide an opportunity for these children to contribute towards, and make
a difference to their environment by being a part of tree planting drives.

To have this now small project expand in terms of areas of focus and reach.

Children from 8th to 10th Standards from 5 Government/ rural schools

    1) Target children from each school attend a fun presentation we will hold
in each of the schools on “The state of our world and our impact on it”,
lead by our facilitator, Kalyan, who is skilled in kids’ activities and
    environmental concerns.
    2) Children from each school are then invited to take on being involved in
the planting of trees – school-wise, on one day each.
    3) After the tree planting, the children will take part in an activity
called Bush craft, where they use whatever material is available around them
    and create something unique.
    4) At the end of the tree planting activities, each child is gifted a school
    bag/ canvas shoes.
    4) From each school, 10 children are selected as winners of the Bush Craft
contest and are treated to a full day of outdoor fun activities under Gerard
    5) Media coverage will be given for the project to spread awareness of the
existence of the project and to rope in more volunteers.
    6) Through word of mouth invitations to people & media coverage, the project
will expand in terms of the sheer numbers of participants, so that the
project can then move into other areas of urban environmental concerns -
waste management, alternate energy, rain-water harvesting, etc.,

The presentations for the children will be given on the respective school
Tree planting drive will be held at locations selected by the NGO Trees for

*Where the project stands right now/ Sponsorship details for the first

Right now, we are targeting our first school – Rural and government school
from Gunjur, on the outskirts of Bangalore.
We are gave our fun presentation this Saturday – 5th July ‘08 to 600 high
school children. We intend to gift them school bags and pens, along with
flyers with the presentation materials on it, for their future reference.
    For this we require sponsorship.

We will be ready with two scenarios of the presentation – with or without
video. The only difference being in the first part of the presentation – a
look at the global environment status.

The point is to start on a global scale before delving into the state of
    things in our city.

    1) Global warming – What is it? How does it work? What affects it? Briefly
covering glaciers, polar bears, penguins, sea lions, seals.

(Either VIDEO or SKITS & CHARTS. Our skits person is Mansi, contact -
Neethi. Video will be edited by Yasmin, Kaushik and

    2) Change in global climate over the last few decades – deforestation &

    3) Species eradication – Indian rhinos, Indian cheetahs, (tree species &
    bird species)

    4) Overpopulation and it’s impact – food scarcity, crowding, shortage of

    5) The predictable future if no action is taken.

    6) What can make a difference?

    1) Then and now – lakes, tree-chopping, development, traffic, pollution,
waste management (or the lack of it!), plastics, sparrows, dogs vs humans,

    2) Predictable future of our city if no action is taken.

    3) Progress can go hand-in-hand with sustainability. How we can make a
    difference. Plant a tree!

    Planting trees.
